As Gary is faced with the pure evil of his father, and the sordid relationships he has with alcohol and others, Gary is at the crossroads where Joe took the wrong turn earlier in life. The movie portrays Joe as an anti-hero who chooses sacrifice over self-preservation, redemption over ruin.
