Find Out About Joseph Smith: Plates of Gold
According to Latter Day Saint belief, the golden plates are the source from which Joseph Smith claimed to have translated the Book of Mormon, a sacred text of the faith. Some witnesses described the plates as weighing from 30 to 60 pounds, golden in color, and composed of thin metallic pages engraved on both sides and bound with three D-shaped rings. Smith said that he found the plates on September 22, 1823 on a hill, near his home in Manchester, New York, after the angel Moroni directed him to

But his calling is not without turmoil and sacrifice for both Joseph and his young bride, Emma. The pair must endure rejection and persecution as they labor to know and do the will of the Lord. Joseph Smith: Plates of Gold is a must-see for Latter-day Saints or anyone who has heard the name of Joseph Smith.

Joseph Smith Jr. is said to have found similar golden plates on September 22, 1823, in a hill near his home in Manchester, New York. He claimed that an angel named Moroni had directed him to a buried stone box, containing a set of gold plates, covered with strange symbols.

When the time had come for Joseph Smith to receive the gold plates, he borrowed a horse and wagon and went with his wife, Emma, to the Hill Cumorah, where the plates were buried. Joseph left Emma with the wagon at the bottom of the hill and climbed the hill alone to meet the angel Moroni. Moroni gave Joseph the gold plates.

According to Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism, in 1823 the angel Moroni guided him to some golden plates buried on a hill near to where he lived. Smith apparently collected these plates, took them home, and subsequently translated them into the Book of Mormon which he then published in 1830.

Phelps said that Joseph Smith, Hyrum Smith, Oliver Cowdery, and David Whitmer went to the Hill Cumorah and “walked into a room about 16 ft. square. In that room was an angel and a trunk. On that trunk lay a Book of Mormon and gold plates, Laban’s sword, Aaron’s breastplate.”

Who besides Joseph Smith actually saw the gold plates? Moroni showed the plates to Oliver Cowdery, David Whitmer, and Martin Harris (see "The Testimony of the Three Witnesses," Book of Mormon). Joseph showed the plates to Christian Whitmer, Hiram Page, Jacob Whitmer, Joseph Smith Sr., Peter Whitmer Jr., Hyrum Smith, John Whitmer, and Samuel H. Smith (see "The Testimony of Eight Witnesses," Book of Mormon).

If the plates were made of eight karat gold, which is gold frequently used in present-day jewelry, and allowing a 10 percent space between the leaves, the total weight of the plates would not be above one hundred and seventeen pounds—a weight easily carried by aman as strong as was Joseph Smith. 5
